Biography of Matthew J. Kerner CPA Matthew J. (Matt) Kerner is currently the Director of Finance at Doctors Without Borders USA. After graduation Matt began a career in Public Accounting in the 1980’s. In the 1990’s he ventured into financial advisory and specialized in tax and investment planning for individuals and small businesses. After 10 years of self-employment he transitioned to the world of Non-Profit Controllership, where sense of mission is strong and financial acumen…not always so much. He has worked to encourage management teams to embrace financial rigor, discipline and common sense, emphasizing communication and trying to demystify the Finance function. Matt’s roles as Finance Director for international not for profits enabled him to establish relationships with co-workers and colleagues in Asia, Africa, Europe and South America. He was and is humbled by the accounting talent he encountered, and treasures the relationships he’s established and maintained. He established weekly Skype chats with Finance Managers in 12 different countries and successfully (if not painfully) rolled out a uniform cloud-based accounting solution. Recently, Matt was elected to the Doctors Without Borders’ Finance Directors’ Platform, a group representing the 20+ Finance Directors of the worldwide Doctors Without Borders Movement. The Platform acts as the “CFO’s of the Movement.” When not working, Matt enjoys spending time with family, running, cardio kickboxing and reading. He is an avid NY sports fan and remains upset that the Mets did not re-sign Bartolo Colon a.k.a. Big Sexy!
